What is the Pediatric Lipid Clinic?

The Pediatric Lipid Clinic is involved in helping families optimize their approach to a heart healthy lifestyle. Clients are seen with disorders to lipid metabolism (abnormal cholesterol levels), many of whom have family histories of cholesterol disorders and premature coronary artery disease. The focus of the clinic is to improve the heart health of the child and family through an educational program administered by the interdisciplinary clinical team.

The primary mode of treatment for children with lipid disorders include diet and exercise and may include lipid-lowering medications in some children. The team in the clinic includes a pediatrician, pediatric endocrinologist, registered nurse and registered dietician. Team members are also involved in research directed at better understanding childhood aspects of lipid disorders and work towards optimizing cardiovascular disease prevention strategies.
