McMaster Children's Hospital is the primary provider of tertiary health care services for children in Hamilton and the surrounding region. McMaster Children's Hospital has activities on two sites (McMaster site and Chedoke site).

McMaster Children's Hospital has:

  • 165 acute care beds
    • 15 Medical beds
    • 15 Surgical beds
    • 12 Hematology/Oncology beds
    • 13 Intermediate care beds
    • 2 electrophysiology monitoring beds (EMU)
    • 46 Neonatal Intensive Care beds
    • 14 Level II Nursery beds
    • 12 Critical Care beds
    • 22 Mental health beds
    • 4 Mental health assessment unit beds
    • 6 Eating Disorder program beds
    • 4 Express beds (Open 12 hours or more to accept overflow admitted patients from the ER)


  • 6 Mental health day beds
  • 4 Eating disorder day beds


  • 40 pediatric specialty clinics at the McMaster and Chedoke sites of the Children's Hospital
    • over 198,000 visits to our outpatient clinics and testing facilities


Services provided in fiscal year 2015/16:

  • 7,949 discharges (i.e. inpatients)
  • 5,267 surgeries performed (inpatient 2,044, outpatient 3,223)
  • 794 children admitted to the Pediatric Critical Care Unit
  • 1,101 babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • 585 babies admitted to the Level II nursery
  • 47,590 emergency department visits
