Pediatric Chronic Pain Program

The goal of the Pediatric Chronic Pain Program (PCPP) is to provide you with the knowledge and tools to cope with and manage your difficult-to-explain pain and to empower caregivers with the skills necessary to support their efforts.

The PCPP is made up of an experienced group of healthcare professionals who work together to manage and treat chronic pain. While working with our team, you may meet:

  • Physicians
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Physiotherapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Social Workers
  • Child Life Specialists
  • Nurses
  • Psychologists
  • Pharmacists

Our focus is on reducing the impact pain has on children, youth and their families. We understand that chronic pain can have a significant impact on physical health (being active), emotional health (thoughts and feelings), and social well-being (attending school, spending time with friends). Because of the complex nature of chronic pain, our team members work together to provide intense rehabilitation approach that focuses on each of these domains using the “3 P” approach.

3 P Approach

Our interdisciplinary team involves experts in medical, psychological/psychosocial, and rehabilitative health. Together, we work with children, adolescents, and their families to develop and deliver an personalized treatment plan that centers around:

  • Pharmacological Treatment (Medicine)- Our team of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists will evaluate how medications can be used to treat or reduce pain so that children and adolescents can improve their function and return to activities like school, sports and other social events.

  • Psychological/Psychosocial Treatment  - The Chronic Pain Program knows that your pain is real. We also know that your thoughts and feelings play a powerful role in treatment. Our psychologists and social workers use various cognitive, behavioural, family, and acceptance-based approaches to provide you and your family with the skills necessary to cope with and manage your chronic pain and to promote your emotional well-being(3.g. challenging unhelpful ways of thinking, relaxation strategies, mindfulness, etc.)

  • Physical Treatments -“If you don’t use it, you lose it!” The Chronic Pain Program knows that a lack of movement can decondition your body and increase your pain. This can affect your mood, your thoughts , and your overall outlook on life. Our physiotherapists and occupational therapists will look at creative ways of increasing your movement and activity with the goal of improving your endurance, strength, posture, sensory experience and overall function. Behavioural activation, activities of daily living and adaptive coping for school may also be a part of rehabilitation.
