Neonatal Resuscitation Program - Essential Course Details - NICU Refresher

In order to complete the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, you will participate in a self-directed learning component, an on-line knowledge exam, and a specialized classroom session that has been tailored to meet your needs as a member of the NICU Team at McMaster Children's Hospital.

(1) Self-Directed Learning

In preparation for NRP, you will need to use the NRP textbook to facilitate your learning.

The self-directed learning component of the course must be completed before attempting the online exam and attending a classroom session. The length of time needed for studying will be different for every individual, based on their professional background, experience, and learning style.

Please allow yourself adequate study time.

Course materals are not included in the course tuition fee.

The Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) oversees NRP in Canada. The Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 7th Edition (ISBN 13:978-1-61002-024-4) is required for this course.  NRP course materials can be purchased from the Canadian Paediatric Society: (613-526-9397)

The NRP Textbook and Pocket Cards are also available in the McMaster University Health Sciences Book Store ( (905- 525-8527)

(2) Online Exam

Prior to attending the classroom session, course participants are required to successfully complete an on-line examination.

The online exam must be taken no more than 30 days prior to attending the classroom session. Proof of successful completion (verification of completion certificate) must be presented to your instructor during course check-in.  A paper copy is required.

The fee for the online exam (payable to the Canadian Paediatric Society) is not included in your course tuition.  You are responsible for payment of the exam fee when you register to take the exam.  The link for the exam is as follows:

You will be responsible for completing the 7th Edition exam sections for Lessons 1-11.  The exam is divided into two parts: Part I covers Lessons 1-5 and Part II covers Lessons 6-11.

(3) Classroom Session

The classroom session of the NICU NRP Refresher is scheduled to be 4 hours in length. The classroom session is devoted entirely to giving you the opportunity to practise and apply NRP resuscitation skills.   There will be a combination of small group sessions and simulation-based curriculum, specifically geared towards your learning needs.  Course content will focus applying your knowledge as well as both technical and team resuscitation skills.

Our goal is to offer an exciting and practical learning experience in a relaxed environment. We look forward to meeting you during the course and know that you will leave the course with important knowledge and skills critical to resuscitating newborns.  If you have any questions prior to this course, please do not hesitate to contact us at
