Program History

On March 26, 2004, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services announced the government's plan to enhance services for children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

One of the strategies was the establishment of the Autism Spectrum Disorder School Support Program.

The mandate included an understanding to build upon current capacity and continue to support educators, using evidence-based behavioural and social communication practices.

Hamilton Health Sciences elected to begin the development and implementation of a brief service model of support and partnership throughout the Hamilton, Niagara, and Brant-Haldimand-Norfolk regions.

An indirect service model was mandated to enhance the knowledge and skills of educators in their support of students with ASD.

Services to school began in Fall 2004, and we are currently celebrating two years of partnership with the Hamilton Health Sciences, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and the Ministry of Education.

The below map indicates the geographical boundaries of the ASD School Support Program supported through Hamilton Health Sciences; however, the program is a province-wide initiative. The eight remaining geographical areas below indicate both the geographical regions and the host agences for all of Ontario. Attached is a downloadable document which provides contact information for all programs across Ontario.
