NRP:  Neonatal Resuscitation Program

About the program

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program features hands-on skills training, simulation-based learning, and debriefing exercises with the neonatal resuscitation team.  Our NRP instructors are a combination of nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and midwives with substantial newborn care experience.

We will be transitioning to the 7th Edition of the NRP Program in February 2017. 

6TH EDITION COURSE INFORMATION

Currently, there are two versions of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program available through the Simulation and Outreach Program.   There are Basic and Advanced courses available, according to the needs of the participant.

Basic Course

Advanced Course

 

The Basic course is intended for healthcare professionals who may be responsible for the resuscitation of newborns during the first few minutes of a resuscitation and who have access to support from advanced level providers within minutes.  

The Basic course is appropriate for healthcare professionals who do not have advanced level NRP skills within their current scope of practice or current practice environment.

 

 

The Advanced course is intended for healthcare professionals who are members of any team that provides advanced interventions during newborn resuscitation, according to their role and scope of practice.

 

 

Course Content:

 - Covers Lessons 1-4 & 9*

 - Includes: principles of resuscitation, initial steps of resuscitation, use of resuscitation devices, chest compressions, and ethics and care at the End of Life.

- Requires successful completion of a Basic Megacode Resuscitation

 

Course Content:

 - Covers Lessons 1-9*

 - Includes all components of Basic course plus: endotracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway insertion, umbilical venous cannulation, medication administration, special considerations, and resuscitation of preterm infants.

 - Requires successful completion of an Advanced Megacode Resuscitation

 

Prerequisite:

RM, RN, RPN, RRT, GRT, PCP, or Student-Medical/Midwifery/Nursing/Respiratory/Paramedic 

 

Prerequisite:

 MD, RM, RN, RRT, GRT, ACP, or CCP

 Midwifery Level 3/4

*6th Edition participants have the option of using the 7th Edition textbook and completing all Lessons on the online exam (Lessons 1-11). 

7TH EDITION COURSE INFORMATION

We will begin to offer the 7th Edition of the NRP Program in February 2017.

There are two versions of the 7th Edition Neonatal Resuscitation Program available through the Simulation and Outreach Program.   New Provider and Experienced Provider courses are available, according to the experience level of the participant and his/her clinical role.

By completing either course, successful participants will receive NRP Provider status issued by the Canadian Pediatric Society. NRP Provider cards will not indicate which course was completed.

The New Provider course is intended for healthcare professionals who may be responsible for the resuscitation of newborns within their respective clinical settings.  The New Provider course is appropriate for healthcare professionals who have not previously completed a NRP Provider course, those looking to enter a position involving newborn care, or those who do not regularly perform newborn resuscitation as part of their current clinical responsibilities.

 

 

 

The Experienced Provider course is intended for healthcare professionals who currently provide newborn resuscitation as part of their clinical responsibilities, on a regular and on-going basis.

Prerequisite:

(1) MD, RM, RN, RPN, RRT, GRT, PCP, or IMG

[or]

(2) Student - Midwifery (Level 2/3/4)

Student -Medicine/Nursing/Respiratory/Paramedic  (final year of studies)

 

Prerequisites:

(1) MD, RM, RN, RPN, RRT, GRT, ACP, or CCP

and

(2) Responsible for providing newborn resuscitation within current clinical role.

Course Content:

 - Covers Lessons 1-11

 - Includes: principles of resuscitation, initial steps of resuscitation, use of resuscitation devices, chest compressions, endotracheal intubation, laryngeal mask airway insertion, umbilical venous cannulation, medication administration, special considerations, and resuscitation of preterm infants and ethics and care at the End of Life.

- Requires successful completion of a Basic or Advanced Integrated Skills Assessment (practical test) according to the participant's legal scope of practice.

 

 

Course Format

Training in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program is a three-step process including:

(1) A self-directed learning component,

(2) Successful completion of an on-line knowledge exam, and

(3) Attendance at a classroom session for hands-on skill development, practice, and testing.
